The short answer

AI coding tools now span developer environments, browser-based application builders and visual interfaces for creating working software. Cursor, Replit, v0, Lovable and Bolt are worth comparing, but they should not all be evaluated with the same demo. Begin with your project, its maintainer and its delivery requirements. This guide explains which kinds of trial reveal useful differences without treating generated code as a finished product.

Existing codebase or new application?

For an existing repository, start with a bounded issue: fix a bug, add a tested behavior or explain a difficult module. Cursor’s coding-agent workflow is a relevant candidate. Evaluate whether the change follows the project’s conventions and leaves a diff that another developer can review.

For a new application, Replit offers an integrated app-building environment. v0, Lovable and Bolt also present AI-assisted application creation workflows, with different publishing and service integrations. Their product pages establish scope; the right choice still requires a pilot that resembles your intended application.

Build beyond the attractive first screen

A useful app trial includes more than a landing page. Add an empty state, a form error, a stored record and an action that should be limited to an authorized user. Test the deployed application on a small screen and with ordinary imperfect inputs.

Ask the tool to revise an existing feature after the first version works. That exposes whether the project remains understandable as requirements change. Track time spent diagnosing mistakes and repairing regressions, not only the time required to generate the first preview.

Inspect the path to ownership

Check repository access, source export, deployment, environment variables and the connected services the app depends on. v0 explicitly presents a connection to Vercel deployment and repository workflows. Other builders describe integrated backend or hosting services; confirm the exact arrangement for your project.

Someone must be responsible for updates, backups and access. Choose a tool whose output and operating model that person can maintain. If the product will hold customer data or process payments, review those paths before inviting real users, even when the initial interface appears complete.

Budget for iteration and operation

Compare a realistic month of building and running the application. Include agent usage, hosting, databases and third-party APIs. A low starting subscription is not the same thing as a low total operating cost, especially when repeated revisions consume a usage allowance.

Begin with a small project and explicit acceptance criteria. Keep a working version before large changes and validate the actual production deployment. Our shortlist reflects published workflows, not a claim that one tool writes safer or better code. A successful choice is one that helps your team ship a maintainable result.
